Garcia The Firestarter

The goals of Al Davis signing Jeff Garcia to a contract are two fold:

#1: Sign a veteran QB to act as a capable backup and insurance policy in case JaMarcus Russell gets injured.

#2: Allow Garcia's competitiveness to light a fire under Russell's ass and push him to greater heights.

The season hasn't started and in my humble opinion, both goals have been realized. For starters, Garcia is a much more accomplished and established backup than Andrew Walter or Tui could ever hope to be. But more importantly, the signing and presence of Garcia has been a huge boost and instigator to get Russell to take the next steps in his career progression. I hope Russell feels threatened by Garcia. I hope Russell senses Garica breathing down his neck.

There has clearly been an added dimension and focus to how Russell has reacted this offseason. Players on the offensive unit have remarked to the media about Russell's improved command of the huddle in OTAs. Russell took it upon himself to organize and pay for WRs to join him in Alabama to work on their timing and build a rapport. Russell has even been confident enough about his offseason conditioning that he has made a friendly wager with his head coach about coming into camp at a designated weight.

Although Russell is only 23 years old, he isn't naive. He is aware of the statements Garcia has made to the press about being the guy who gives the Raiders the best chance to win. I love it. Russell is a prideful, confident, talented QB. The signing of Garcia gave him that little extra juice to start doing all of the extra things required of a franchise QB.

Yes this off season looks promising for the Raiders in 2009. A great back up QB to Finally give Russell some edge and with the NEW additions to our team on offense and our additions on defense i think we can content for once in the AFC west. All good moves by the Raiders this year and i think we should do good.

Nice post man and here's to 2009.

Hey Calico,
Whats up man?
Have you ever heard of a QB taking their wide receivers and flying them out to their house to practice before training camp? This says alot about Russell and totally discredits all the media who were making a big deal about this work ethics. What a bunch of clowns huh?
This is pretty cool.
By the way you always post very cool stuff. Keep it going man. I will be back.

I'm all for Garcia being the "Back up QB",even though I've never cared much for him. But, I don't like all the Crap his been saying. He can either Shut his mouth and be a team player,or cut him for the good of the team. We don't need "Me" attitudes destroying our team,as it's getting close to doing something very good. Jeff, shut your Penis trap and be a team player !!!

Torpedo: Competition is the best thing for a struggling football team. I have no problem whatsoever with Garcia's comments to the press. Would you expect him to just roll over? His fiery attitude and confidence in his abilities breeds healthy competition. If you noticed from his past remarks, his comments were always framed in terms of what is in the TEAM's best interest not his own. With Garcia as the #2 QB, Russell has no choice but to step up his game.

then again, he could just kick back knowing it's HIS job and not worry about anything.

calico, i respectfully and hopefully temporarily disagree with your statement "talented QB". up to this point he's shown "flashes". until those flashes turn into consistency, then i'll start to place my confidence in him.

this is his year to show what he's got.

If Garcia brings a little 'heat' to Russel, so be it.
The NFL is a BIG-BOY world with guys making BIG-BOY checks.
I hope Russell lights it up for the next 12 years and Garcia never set a foot on the field. But if Russell slips, I have no trouble with Garcia over center.

No doubt, the last 6 seasons the Raiders have been 'pathetic'.

However, how about some perspective?

Do you realize that the Raiders have been to the SB more recently than the following teams:

SF
St.Louis
Atlanta
New Orleans
Green Bay
Minnesota
Detroit
Dallas
Washington
Denver
Kansas City
San Diego
Tennessee
Jacksonville
Houston
Baltimore
Cleveland
Cincinnati
Miami
NY Jets
Buffalo

Do you realize the Raiders have participated in 5 SBs and won 3 while these teams have never won a SB ... EVER:

Arizona
Seattle
Carolina
Atlanta
New Orleans
Minnesota
Detroit
Philadelphia
San Diego
Tennessee
Jacksonville
Houston
Cleveland
Cincinnati
Buffalo

Do you understand that the true definition of pathetic is in 43 SBs played, these teams have yet to get there:

New Orleans
Detroit
Jacksonville
Cleveland
Houton Texans

Based on your list, do you want me to congratulate New Orleans for being at .500 more recent than the Raiders? Last time I checked, the goal of every team is to make it to the SB and win. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Jefe.

I will be the first to share my disappointment with Raider fans or other team fans about the past 6 seasons. To put it mildly, the last 6 seasons have been ineptitude on a grand scale.

However, for all the haters there is always a need for perspective. I've got some yahoo at work who was constantly busting my balls about how the Raiders stink. The guy happens to be a Cowgirl fan. One day I reached a boiling point and asked this guy point blank "When was the last time you guys won a single F'N playoff game?1995 ... and you want to gloat about 'America's Team'? Please!

Getting to your question; No, I can't recall another QB doing what JRuss did. No doubt it is an important step in his development as a QB and club leader.
